There’s Still Time to Learn This Key Skill in 2023 - Copywriting
Hello everyone,
Today, I’m excited to share a blog post about copywriting, a skill that currently occupies my full attention and mind. I’m deeply immersed in learning it, and I find it so incredible that I must share some insights with you.
First, we’ll cover “What is copywriting?” Then, “Why is it such a powerful skill that brings incredible value to businesses?” Finally, I’ll share some tips I’ve already learned on the subject and resources to deepen your knowledge.
Without further ado, let’s dive in!
Disclaimer: I am not (yet?) a professional copywriter, so I am only sharing my learning journey in this blog post. Some information may not be 100% accurate.
What is Copywriting?
Copywriting is the art of writing text intended to convince and persuade the reader or consumer to take a specific action—whether it’s purchasing a product, subscribing to a newsletter, making a donation, etc. A copywriter acts like a salesperson who, equipped with a keyboard, leverages human psychology and refined writing techniques to persuade a customer. Pretty cool, right?
Why is it So Powerful and Useful for Businesses?
Simply because this skill increases conversion rates! Conversion rate? In short, it’s the percentage of visitors who complete the desired action for the business, whether it’s a purchase, a subscription, or another valuable interaction. For example, if out of 100 website visitors, 10 make a purchase, your conversion rate is 10%.
Beyond conversion rates, copywriting also helps build and refine a company’s brand identity. Great copywriting reflects a business’s personality, values, and unique value proposition. It creates an emotional connection with consumers, adding a human touch that goes beyond a mere commercial transaction.
To master this skill, it’s crucial to analyze and deeply understand your target audience. By stepping into the consumer’s shoes, you can craft messages that truly resonate with them, evoking emotions and addressing specific needs—ultimately increasing the chances of conversion.
But don’t be mistaken—copywriting isn’t just for sales pages or advertisements. It’s everywhere: in emails, on social media, in blog posts, and even in videos. Copywriting is the art of communicating effectively and persuasively, regardless of the medium.
And the beauty of this craft is that it’s constantly evolving. With the emergence of new technologies and social media, copywriters must continuously adapt and innovate, making copywriting a dynamic, essential skill for any company looking to stand out and succeed in today’s competitive landscape.
Thus, investing in quality copywriting skills is not just a smart strategy—it’s a necessity for any business that wants to differentiate itself and build an authentic, lasting relationship with its customers. It is the foundation of successful communication, the driving force that transforms mere visitors into loyal, engaged clients.
Some Tips I’ve Discovered So Far
As I take my first steps toward mastering copywriting, I’ve already uncovered a few tricks I’m excited to share.
First, the title of your text plays the crucial role of grabbing attention. Without a great title, no one will read what follows. A significant effort should go into crafting the title to inspire action or curiosity. The title can also target a specific audience—ideally, your ideal prospect. To write an effective title, consider these key questions:
Questions to Ask Before Writing the Title:
- Who is my customer?
- What are the key features of the product?
- What features do competitors’ products lack?
- Why would the customer want to buy the product? (Which feature provides the most significant benefit?)
In short, research is crucial. And research can take a LOT of time. Once the research phase is complete, you can try writing multiple title variations using the 4 U’s formula.
The 4 U’s Formula:
- Urgent: Give a reason to act now rather than later.
- Unique: Offer a fresh perspective or new information.
- Ultra-Specific: Include precise details that entice the reader to continue reading and make a purchase.
- Useful: Provide a benefit or solution to a problem.
You can then self-evaluate your title attempts based on these four points.
Regarding the text that follows the title, it must serve several key functions:
- Grab attention
- Communicate (tell a story, etc.)
- Persuade (create desire, make promises, offer guarantees, etc.)
- Encourage action (CTA - Call to Action)
To craft an effective message, we can use the 4 S’s method.
The 4 S’s Formula:
- Short words: Use simple, concise words. No need for long, complicated words.
- Short sentences: Keep sentences brief.
- Short paragraphs: Use small, digestible paragraphs.
- Short sections: Organize content into easy-to-read sections.
For now, I won’t share more techniques—this is already a solid introduction to what I’ve learned so far.
